Our Fisheries section are experienced in all forms of fisheries work, from fish surveys to fish rescues. We carry out surveys throughout the UK and into Europe. We are able to field an experienced fisheries team for any situation. Our staff are electrofishing trained to EA standards, operate the latest equipment and embrace strict operating instruction and health and safety risk assessment procedures. All staff are CSCS cardholders, and as such we are aware of our conduct on construction sites, and in and around large plant and equipment. We are fully trained and conversive with all aspects of biosecurity. We have a comprehensive Biosecurity policy and all staff have completed Biosecurity modules for the Invasive Non-Native Species Secretariat. All this means when we turn up at a site you can expect a professional and efficient service, sensitive to the needs of the water industry.
Fisheries Surveys and Assessment
We survey all types waterbodies, from dykes to ditches, streams to rivers, ponds, lakes and lochs, and marine estuaries throughout the UK and further afield. We provide a comprehensive professional service, from data collection to full data analysis using appropriate statistics. We produce interim and final reports. Within the services we provide to the water industry sector, we incorporate biometric data collection and analysis, scale reading, fish ageing and growth analysis through to fish capture surveys such as qualitative assessment:- presence-absence,fully quantitative:- catch depletion, multiple pass, PASE etc as well as population assessment and determination of loss of fish or impact at population level within a reach.
Fisheries Management
Fishtrack provide advice on riparian margin management for the benefit of the aquatic ecosystem and also macrophyte advice and management. We assess habitats for impact or degradation as well as for enhancement opportunities. We provide re-stocking advice and can supply fish for re-stocking following pollution events.
We undertake invertebrate and zooplankton sampling and identification for river systems, streams and lakes, both large and small. Through this sampling we are able to identify potential issues facing a fishery as well as where primary food source for young of the year fishes is being targeted. Providing simple cover can increase this valuable resource availability to fish from enhanced zooplankton population level or increases in species size structure.
In collaboration with our associates we provide comprehensive fish health assessments and parasite identification with full laboratory facilities. Our associate laboratory staff undertake commissions for health checks for fish movements and to assess fish stocks following planned re-stocking events.
Our laboratory carries out biological invertebrate monitoring of fisheries and waterbodies. This enables impact of pollution events to be quickly identified as well as determining the severity of the event. Biological monitoring is also used to confirm the recovery of a stretch of river that has been subjected to a pollution event, since invertebrate recovery is usually faster than fish.
We provide advice on predator avoidance and predation reduction. part of this work entails construction of otter fencing for protection of still water fisheries.
Our services operate on both on an advisory and practical level, often finding novel solutions to fisheries problems
When things do occasionally go wrong from time-to-time, we understand the need for fast response and concise reporting to incidents and events faced by the Water industry. We work with water companies and the Water Industry in the forward planning and management of their fishery resources through to habitat enhancement or protection for endangered species such as European eel or Native White clawed Crayfish.
